2030 Long
Range Transportation
Supplemental Planning
 |
Future transportation strategies were being discussed
and developed even before Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf
Coast. What has happened since August 2005 is a
heightened awareness of how economic, environmental and
social vitality are dependent on a well-designed
transportation system. |
The Governor’s Commission on
Recovery, Rebuilding, and Renewal, through the Mississippi
Renewal Forum, identified many transportation infrastructure
priorities, including to:
-
Build
walkable
neighborhoods and multi-modal streets;
-
Provide a new
east-west multi-modal
corridor in Harrison County;
-
Create a Gulf Coast
bikeway; and
-
Build
transit as a
Development Strategy.
Implicit in the call for a
creation of a new master transportation plan is also the
consideration of the need for intermodal and trucking facilities
as well as improved airport and seaport access.
The Gulf Coast Region’s Long Range
Transportation Plan is being updated to reflect these
priorities. Specifically, five topics are addressed under this
Plan Supplement:
-
East-west multimodal corridor
in Harrison County;
-
Regional goods movements;
-
Alternative transportation
modes (non-motorized travel);
-
Transportation safety issues;
and
-
Transit Development Plan (TDP).
The first round of public meetings
held in late October 2006 provided valuable input on these
issues (round one summary
document). Public
input was received during analysis from working groups and
discussions with local stakeholders.
